The City of Manassas was formerly known as the small railroad crossing of Manassas Junction. Its location was strategic during the Civil War as it had rail lines headed toward Richmond and the Shenandoah Valley, and was the site of First and Second Battles of Manassas (also known as the Battles of Bull Run). The city was incorporated in 1873.
Today, Manassas is a bustling city with a population of almost 40,000. Nearby major highways include I-66, US-29, VA-28, and VA-234. Amtrak and VRE service runs from downtown.
